Wheeling Pittsburgh Steel Corporation
CHALLENGE: Wheeling Corrugating, a subsidiary of Wheeling Pittsburgh Steel Corporation which was emerging from bankruptcy, was awarded the contract to produce and fabricate steel floor decking for the World Trade Center Number 7 as the first new construction at Ground Zero in New York City. As part of our on going PR duties, we were asked to garner positive press coverage about the contract via a press release.
STRATEGY: We developed a plan to increase the media impact by turning the news into a multi-day media event that gained national coverage.
We put on public display, steel floor decking that would be shipped to and installed in the new world trade center building. The public was invited to sign the steel and send their best wishes to the citizens and hero’s of NYC. We also set up steel at all 14 WPSC plants across the country for their employees to sign and send to NYC. On the anniversary of Sept 11, we coordinated a special event in Wheeling that included having the Governor, mayor, and President of Wheeling Pittsburgh Steel make speeches.
RESULTS: Over 30,000 people signed the steel showing support for our client and the citezens and heros of NYC. The steel was shipped and when it was received, a press conference was held in NYC that was hosted by the Governor of New York and the Mayor of NYC.
